How the calculation works

If you are wondering how much caffeine in chocolate is in your serving, this calculator uses typical values for each chocolate category. Actual caffeine can vary substantially by brand and product, so the result is an estimate rather than a guarantee.

Chocolate also contains theobromine, a related stimulant present in much larger amounts than caffeine in dark chocolate. It is not added to this caffeine total.

This tool is a single-serving estimate. Compare your total intake with the published daily reference that applies to you, and remember that a single reading is not a diagnosis; a clinician decides what is appropriate for your situation.

Estimated caffeine (mg) = serving grams × caffeine per gram

Typical caffeine values vary with the product. The FDA says up to 400 mg/day is not generally associated with negative effects for healthy adults; pregnancy and other circumstances may call for different guidance.

Caffeine in chocolate FAQ

How much caffeine is in dark chocolate?

The typical values used here are 80 mg per 100 g for dark chocolate with 70–85% cocoa and 43 mg per 100 g for dark chocolate with 45–59% cocoa.

Does white chocolate have caffeine?

The source table lists white chocolate at 0 mg per 100 g. White chocolate contains no cocoa solids, which is why it has no caffeine in this estimate.

Why does the result say estimated?

Caffeine varies by product and brand. This calculator multiplies your serving weight by a typical category value, so it cannot guarantee the exact caffeine in a particular package.

Does this include theobromine?

No. Theobromine is a related stimulant, not caffeine, so it is not added to the caffeine result.

Are my values saved?

No. The calculation runs in your browser, and this tool does not save the values you enter.
