Espresso Caffeine Calculator

Work out how much caffeine is in an espresso shot: choose how many shots you pulled, how you pulled them and which beans went in. You get the total in mg, the mg per shot and how much of the FDA's 400 mg a day it uses.

Yield per shot, not the dose of grounds.

Robusta holds roughly double the caffeine of arabica.

How much caffeine is in an espresso shot

A standard single espresso is 1 fl oz (30 ml) and carries about 63 mg of caffeine, so the double shot most cafés actually pull comes in around 126 mg. The calculator starts from that 63 mg reference shot and adjusts it for how many shots you had, how they were pulled and which beans went into them.

Bean type moves the number more than anything else on the menu. Arabica is roughly 1.2% caffeine by weight and robusta roughly 2.2%, so a robusta shot lands near 1.85 times an arabica one and a typical commercial blend near 1.4 times. Decaf is a different regime altogether at about 5 mg a shot.

Shot style barely matters by comparison, because caffeine comes out of the grounds rather than the water. A ristretto uses the same dose with less water, so it extracts a little less caffeine in total (about 0.9 times a full shot) while tasting far more concentrated per ml. A lungo runs more water through the same dose and picks up slightly more, about 1.1 times — not the 1.5 times its volume suggests. Brewed coffee makes the opposite trade, a much larger volume from a much larger dose, so use the brewed coffee calculator linked below for drip, pour over and French press.

total mg = 63 mg × shots × style (0.9 ristretto / 1 single / 1.1 lungo) × bean (1 arabica / 1.4 blend / 1.85 robusta)

These are typical values, not a measurement of your cup. Real shots vary with dose, grind, tamp, water temperature and extraction time, and café doubles vary more than anything on this page. Decaf shots run about 3 to 8 mg each, so the 5 mg used here is a midpoint rather than a promise. The FDA's 400 mg a day figure applies to healthy adults; pregnancy, medication and personal sensitivity all change it.

Espresso caffeine FAQ

How much caffeine is in a single espresso shot?

About 63 mg for a standard 1 fl oz (30 ml) arabica shot, which makes a double shot roughly 126 mg. Robusta or robusta-heavy blends push a single well past that, and any real shot moves with the dose of grounds and how it was extracted.

Does a ristretto have more caffeine than a normal shot?

No, it has slightly less in total — around 0.9 times a full shot. It uses the same dose of grounds with less water, so it is more concentrated per ml and tastes stronger, but less caffeine actually ends up in the cup. Concentration and total dose are two different things.

Is decaf espresso caffeine-free?

No. Decaffeination removes most of the caffeine, not all of it, so a decaf shot still carries about 5 mg, typically in a 3 to 8 mg range. That is small next to a regular shot, but several decaf doubles across a day still add up to a measurable amount.

Does a darker roast espresso have more caffeine?

Essentially no. Roasting barely changes the caffeine in a bean. The confusion comes from measuring: darker beans are less dense, so a scoop of dark roast holds fewer beans than the same scoop of light roast, while the same weight holds about the same caffeine. Bean species and how much you dose matter far more than roast colour.

How many espresso shots reach the FDA's 400 mg a day?

The FDA says 400 mg a day is not generally associated with negative effects for healthy adults. That is roughly six standard arabica shots, or three doubles. On robusta-heavy beans you get there in three or four shots — and everything else counts too, including tea, soda and energy drinks.
