How much caffeine in decaf coffee, and why it's never zero
Decaf coffee is not caffeine-free. An 8 oz brewed cup typically holds 2 to 15 mg of caffeine, and a decaf espresso shot 3 to 16 mg, against about 95 mg for regular drip. Small, but never zero.

Why decaf still has caffeine: the 97% rule
In the US, coffee can be labeled decaffeinated once at least 97% of its caffeine has been removed. That's a percentage, not a ceiling — 3% of a lot is more than 3% of a little. Arabica green beans run roughly 1.2% caffeine by weight and robusta about double that, so a decaf blend built on robusta starts with more to strip and tends to end with more left behind.
The EU sets an absolute limit instead: roasted decaf may not exceed 0.1% caffeine by dry weight, and soluble (instant) decaf 0.3%.
Café decaf has a second caffeine source that has nothing to do with the beans: shared grinders, shared portafilters, and the occasional wrong pot. Lab analyses of decaf bought at coffee shops have repeatedly landed at the top of the expected range, with outliers several times the average.
The three decaffeination methods
Swiss Water and other water processes
Green beans soak in water already saturated with everything else soluble in coffee, so mainly caffeine migrates out. The water then passes through activated carbon that traps caffeine and lets flavor compounds through. No solvent touches the bean. Swiss Water is certified to 99.9% caffeine-free; Mexico's Mountain Water Process works the same way.
Supercritical CO2
Above its critical pressure and temperature, carbon dioxide behaves like a selective solvent: it binds caffeine and largely ignores the oils and sugars that carry flavor. The equipment is expensive, so it runs at industrial scale — a lot of supermarket decaf comes out of it. Removal rates are comparable to water processing.
Solvent-based: methylene chloride or ethyl acetate
The most common commercial route, either direct (solvent contacts the beans) or indirect (water pulls the solubles out, solvent strips caffeine from the water, the water returns to the beans). FDA caps methylene chloride residue in roasted coffee at 10 parts per million, and it boils near 104°F, far below roasting or brewing temperatures. The ethyl acetate version is sold as "natural" or "sugarcane" decaf, since ethyl acetate occurs in ripening fruit. Solvent decafs clear the 97% bar but land at the higher end of residual caffeine more often than water or CO2 lots.
Most bags don't name the process. Swiss Water and sugarcane EA get printed because they sell; unlabeled decaf is usually solvent or CO2.
When the residual caffeine actually adds up
Five 8 oz decafs at 10 mg apiece is 50 mg — roughly a cup of black tea, and about an eighth of the FDA's 400 mg per day guideline for healthy adults. Against the 200 mg figure pregnancy guidance commonly cites, the same five cups are a quarter of the published allowance.
Timing is the other case. Caffeine's half-life averages about 5 hours in healthy adults, with a normal range near 3 to 7 and longer for slow metabolizers, so how long caffeine stays in your system varies by person. Ten milligrams at 9 p.m. is noise for most people and noticeable for a few. Caffeine free alternatives that contain none at all
Decaf tea carries the same residue problem as decaf coffee. These start at zero:
- Chicory root. Roasted and ground, it brews dark and bitter with no caffeine. New Orleans-style blends cut it with coffee, so those aren't caffeine-free.
- Rooibos. From Aspalathus linearis, not the tea plant, so there was never caffeine to remove.
- Roasted barley. Mugicha in Japan, boricha in Korea, orzo in Italy. Grain and hot water.
- Mushroom blends. Reishi, chaga, and lion's mane carry no caffeine — but most "mushroom coffee" on shelves is a blend with instant coffee. The ingredient panel settles it.
A caveat about alternatives to coffee for energy: none of these are stimulants. What they reproduce is the ritual — hot, bitter, in a mug at the same hour — plus the fluid, which does more than people expect. They remove the caffeine; they don't replace what it was doing.

Will decaf keep you awake?
For most people, no — 10 mg sits far below the dose that measurably delays sleep onset. High sensitivity and slow metabolism are the exceptions, and a large late decaf from a shared-grinder café setup can carry more than the label implies.
